Helping Australians to get their favourite essentials, specialty produce and ready-made meals delivered
Melbourne, 11 May 2020: As the ongoing restrictions on restaurants continue, and with more people still at home, Deliveroo today launches its new virtual brand, Deliveroo Deli, to support its Australian restaurant partners as well as smaller grocery and deli businesses during the COVID-19 outbreak.
In a first for Australian consumers, Deliveroo customers can now purchase smallgoods, produce, specialty groceries and ready-to-heat meals delivered to their door from favourite local businesses. This is a significant move to help make sure isolated people at home have access to household essentials.
Deliveroo Deli has been developed as a new offering for smaller groceries, delis and independent food stores to reach consumers during the current restrictions on retail and restaurants, while also offering existing Deliveroo restaurant partners a way to expand their offering through new products. Deliveroo is significantly expanding its selection on offer to consumers stuck at home, including through new restaurants that have turned to delivery to reach consumers.
All Deliveroo Deli partners will have access to Deliveroo’s project management, menu optimisation, product photography and marketing support for free. Deliveroo is also removing the onboarding fee and lowering commission rates for Deliveroo Deli partners. Products will be available to order on Deliveroo, as normal, and delivered straight to people’s homes in as little as 30 minutes.
Ed McManus, CEO, Deliveroo Australia, said:
“Deliveroo Deli is filling the gaps for Australians to get the specialty grocery and deli food they love delivered, while supporting our restaurant partners through the challenges of this current time.
“We know many of our restaurant partners are looking for ways to expand their offering during this difficult time, while many smaller and specialty food businesses have not been able to reach a broader audience through delivery. Deliveroo Deli solves both these problems, giving these businesses a way to reach more customers and Australians greater access to incredible food.
“Many Australians in the food and hospitality industry have been hurt by the COVID-19 crisis and our focus is on how best we can support these businesses through this time. Deliveroo Deli is an important brand addition to the platform; it expands the selection available to consumers and helps many of the specialty food stores Australians love make the shift to delivery and reach new customers.”
Con Christopoulos, owner of Melbourne’s Spring Street Grocer, said:
”We are so excited to offer our favourite Spring St Grocer products through Deliveroo Deli - a new service offering a local and premium alternative to supermarkets .
Basic but always quality ingredients like 00 flour, fresh and dried yeast, capers and smoked paprika for the bakers and cooks. Or ready to heat and eat meals being made with love in our primavera range by our chefs from City Wine shop and the European .
The Deli has everything from dry aged steak and bottles of wine to curry paste or cheese imported and matured by our cheese mongers - and paired expertly with our on site sommeliers.”
Mark Richerdson, owner of Sydney deli Bel & Brio, said:
“As we are still coming to terms with the impact of COVID-19, Bel and Brio has revised its business model to accommodate the ‘new normal’. Deliveroo has been a crucial platform for us over the last few weeks, and we are therefore very excited to be part of their new initiative: Deliveroo Deli. It's always important for us to find new ways to reach and grow our audience, especially in the current situation, and with Deliveroo Deli we can continue sharing the Bel & Brio experience with our customers.”
Ben Wood, director of Melbourne restaurant Asado, said:
"Since the 23rd of March Asado has been managed solely by our staff who have no access to government assistance. These staff are the backbone of our industry and needed all the support we could give, all profits from this initiative will be distributed to them.
We're really pleased to join Deliveroo Deli and we welcome the initiative in Melbourne. In this time it's been more important than ever for us to find new ways to connect to our customers and get our product out there, so we're looking forward to reaching a broader audience with Deliveroo Deli."
