There’s been a 30 percent jump in the number of Australians switching to an adjustable bed in the last 12 months, with many making the change due to the health benefits which include reducing pain, increasing blood circulation and helping with sleep apnea.

This comes as nearly one in two Australians complain they are not not getting enough sleep due to pain, discomfort and restlessness.

Bed expert Darren Nelson from Solace Sleep says for older Australians, it could be the way they lie in bed to begin with, that’s the problem, adding unwanted pressure and causing pain.

“There’s been a huge increase in the number of people swapping a traditional bed for an adjustable one - because of their health benefits including reducing pain and heart issues,” he says.

“Our spines are curved - not flat so why spend so many hours unsupported?”

“An adjustable bed can help reduce inflammation and swelling. Elevating the legs helps to relieve pressure on the spine. It also helps to support the natural curve of the spine during sleep.”

“It also improves blood circulation which benefits the whole circulatory system.”

“Elevating the legs to at or above the level of your heart with an adjustable bed can help alleviate swelling and promote better circulation in the extremities by taking the pressure off of your legs and promoting better blood flow.”

Data shows millions of Australians struggle with sleep apnoea or snoring.

“This usually means the airways need to be opened up and raising the head section of your bed can allow easy breathing.”

“To relieve pain you need to know where the pain is. Pressure mapping is a holistic approach to health.”

“Positional therapy is where you match the bed to the natural curves of your body. It means that it also alleviates pressure points of your body - that’s the key to bed bases.”

“Then we have comfort therapy, which is matching your body to a mattress that is comfortable.”

“There’s a desire to invest in making yourself as comfortable as possible with an adjustable bed and a good quality mattress,’ he says.

“Too many people are sleeping in the wrong sort of bed,” Mr Nelson says.

Benefits of sleeping on an adjustable bed:

Reduces inflammation and swelling: Elevating the legs help to relieve pressure on the spine. It also helps to support the natural curve of the spine during sleep.

Reduces heartburn, acid reflux: Elevating your upper body by 6-8 inches alone can improve acid reflux symptoms, as well as help your body to digest food more efficiently.
Improves asthma and snoring: Millions of Australians struggle with sleep apnoea or snoring. This usually means the airways need to be opened up and raising the head section of your bed can allow easy breathing.

Alleviate back and shoulder pain: Sleeping on an elevated angle is taking pressure off the spine. This also improves blood circulation which benefits the whole circulatory system.

Less risk of heart problem: Elevating the legs to at or above the level of your heart with an adjustable bed can help alleviate this swelling and promote better circulation in the extremities by taking the pressure off of your legs and promoting better blood flow.

Solace Sleep has three warehouses in QLD and one in Perth, with a fourth warehouse under construction in Queensland. Beds can be purchased through Catch, Kogan, EBay and Bunnings online.
